You were my friend when I was alone
You were my prayer when I had none
You were my hope in a world void of light
You were a song in the night...

What do you see?

A little on the unfinished side, but still one of my favorite songs.

***

What do you see when you look out on the world of men?
What do you see when you lift your eyes from your page and your pen?
What do you see, tell me, what do you see, before the darkness closes again?
What do you see in the swirling mist, what do you see my friend?

I see darkness, I see fire; I see pain and suffering and death.
I see anger, I see hatred; I see war and wasted breath.
I see falsehood, I see lying; I see desolation beyond compare.
I see it’s empty, I see it’s lonely; my friend there is nothing there.

What do you see when you look out beyond the frozen waste?
What do you see when you lift your eyes to another place?
What do you see, tell me, what do you see? Is there a single friendly face?
What do you see in the swirling mist beyond the stars of space?

I see a child frightened she is crying out in fear
I see women running, screaming, there is horror everywhere.
The anger has no boundaries, there is bloodshed every day
The view is clearing-
I don’t want to-
but I cannot look away.

What do you see when you look out across the gap of time?
What do you see in a world that drowned in the blood of crime?
What do you see, tell me, what do you see? Before the darkness covers the end?
What do you see?

Only misery.

What do you see my friend?
